Stress Awareness

April is Stress Awareness Month. Learn about what Stress can do to your body and supplements that can help you help your body better handle the stress.

We all know the havoc chronic stress can have on our bodies. From inflammation and anxiety issues, to sleepless nights, depression, and so much more, stress is so detrimental to our well-being.

Did you know that stress can cause the following issues:

Anxiety Depression High Blood Pressure  Irritable Bowl Syndrome
Appetite Changes Difficulty Concentrating Insomnia Skin Problems
Cardiovascular Disease Dizziness Irritability/Mood Swings Weight Gain
Decreased Sex Drive Fatigue

So how do we reduce the impact that stress can have on our bodies? Diet and exercise are two ways. Supplements are another way.

There are many supplements that are classified as ‘adaptogens’. Adaptogen is defined in the Oxford dictionary as “a natural substance considered to help the body adapt to stress and to exert a normalizing effect upon bodily processes.” The National Institute of Health describes adaptogens as “increasing the state of non-specific resistance in stress and decrease sensitivity to stressors, which results in stress protection, and prolong the phase of resistance (stimulatory effect). Instead of exhaustion, a higher level of equilibrium (the homeostasis) is attained the heterostasis.”1

Examples of adaptogen herbs are:

5HTP Cordycep Mushrooms Holy Basil Reishi Mushrooms
Ashwagandha Eleuthero Magnesium Rhodiola
Astragalus GABA Panax Ginseng Schisandra Berry

These adaptogenic supplements help your body to better handle the stress we encounter daily, and in intense situations.  When we give our bodies a leg up on handling stress, we reduce the risk of a dangerous cardiovascular event, we promote a healthy metabolism, improve cortisol, reduce fatigue and brain fog, and support a healthier mood.2

Additional supplementation with Omega Fatty Acids, L-Theanine, Glycine, and Vitamins B and C can help enhance the positive effects of adaptogens on our bodies by helping to support a better sleep cycle, providing neurological and immune support, and balancing our neurotransmitters.
